Single Mom Dating: Why Are You Doing This To Me Patti?

The more and more I watch Patti on The Millionaire Matchmaker, the more I find myself getting more and more frustrated. I’m 32 years old with a child obviously you know that by the title Single Mom Dating. I don’t think I am ugly. I give myself a solid 7. If I finished losing these last 30 pounds I would be a 9 hands down. Anyhow, Patti is making it seem that if you’re in your early 30’s don’t expect to date men younger or only a few years older. Bank on it that he will be 15-20 years older. Those stats repulse me. The thought of dating someone that is gray haired, dressing in dockers and goofy loafers and who has hair stinking out his ears is not my idea of husband material. I shouldn’t have to put up with that until I myself have reached that age bracket. i will have evolved then.

I feel youthful and I fell as though I look youthful. I have children to be had still and yet Patti is making it seem that because I am in the 30’s that no man in his 30’s would want to date me because I am past my prime. What’s even worse is she makes it seem that because I am a single mom dating, that I should be thankful for any man interested in me. Like it’s a disease. (She didn’t say this to me specifically but that is how she comes across when she is dealing with single parents on the show).

I think I have complained many times in this blog about older men that contact me on dating sites. It never stops. I am consistently getting men 45+ contacting me. It’s driving me bananas!

Older men do not have any more class than 20 somethings either. Tonight a 49 year old sent me a message saying “hey baby call me”. I nearly gagged when I saw he was 49 right away and then his message did me in. No tact!

I just wanted to let you know that Patti isn’t 100% wrong. Sometimes you need to remove the stigma of an older man from your mind. Not all of them wear dockers and look for the 20-somethings. There are plently of men in their 40s that are VERY attractive, successful and fun. As a matter of fact, a lot of time you come across the 40s have ‘Peter Pan Syndrom’ and act like they are 21 again…never wanting to grow up. It’s all about finding the ‘right’ person for you. It takes time. Keep dating, removing the stereotypes (because you, like me, don’t want to be put in that ‘box’ before someone has an opportunity to interact with us) and just know that there are plenty of other women who are forging ahead in this brutal world of dating with you!

I think it’s bogus that Patti (or anyone else) implies that as 30-something single mom we have to settle for less. I am a 35-year old divorced single mom and just recently met a great guy, 34, never married, and has lots of amazing qualities – smart, handsome, successful, great values, funny. He doesn’t mind the single mom thing at all (we met on Match) and he really really likes me. We’ve seen each other a lot over the past month — sometimes 5 times a week, which is a lot, especially for NY! Anyway, I am very lucky I met him, and regardless of what happens, I am just grateful that God in his mercy showed me that wonderful men are still out there, and can still be interested in me, after I feel chewed up and spit out by my divorce. I know the same holds true for you, beautiful singlemomdating — so don’t give in to lowering your standards out of fear, and don’t let women like Patti brainwash you into thinking those stats are more powerful than God’s blessings.

@miminyc – Thanks for sharing and thanks for the encouragement. It’s nice to hear that single moms are still desired by men in our age group. I’m so glad to hear of your success and wish you the best!
